Global Girl Groups: The “Idol System” Expands

Recently, it seems like several South Korean Entertainment companies, especially the Big 4, home to several successful K-Pop groups, are looking to expand their reach. They've begun to partner with record labels from countries such as China, Japan, and the United States to launch "global girl groups". Examples from JYP include Boy Story (China), NiziU (Japan), and most recently, VCHA (United States), formed on the series A2K. A similar series, Dream Academy, is looking to form a multinational girl group of idols, and is a collaboration between Hybe and Geffen. These groups come on the heels of others like XG or Blackswan, both of which promote in South Korea, but have no Korean members. XG technically isn't K-Pop and don't consider themselves to be, and Blackswan is, though they're one of the few groups to not have Korean members. As these global gril groups form, debut, and officially begin to promote, it stands to be seen if they'll make as much of an impact as some of their K-Pop counterparts from their fellow companies.
