We tend to think of relocations as a particularly modern feature of professional sports, something that only today’s breed of greedy billionaire owners would even dream of doing. But that’s not the case. At all. Owners have been relocating pro sports teams since there were pro sports teams to relocate. In fact, some of the most iconic franchises in pro sports today started out in other cities.

The Lakers? They started out in Minneapolis. Relocated to Los Angeles in 1960. The Athletics? Relocated from Philly to Kansas City in 1955 before heading out to Oakland in 1958. The Redskins? Relocated from Boston to DC in 1937.

And let’s not forget about the New York Yankees! Baseball’s most iconic franchise didn’t start in New York. They started as the ORIGINAL Baltimore Orioles in 1901. Then they moved to New York and became the Hilltoppers in 1903, before changing their name to the Yankees in 1913.

So like I said, relocation has been going on forever. It sucks for fans. But it’s just an inherent part of professional sports.

However, that is NOT to say that all relocations are created equal. Some are DEFINITELY worse than others.
