Camcorder - Hi8. Capture hardware - Pinnacle DC10 Plus. Capture Software - AVI_IO. Editing software - Premiere 5.1c. Edited - 2001, probably early part of 2001 due to using that version of Adobe's admittedly decent software package, and then put out to S-VHS. The picture quality is looking rather soft, but then I was having difficulties with the the DC10 Plus capture board. where it offered full frame capture, frames were starting to be dropped more frequently. Possibly the computer needed a rebuild, but then it wasn't that old. To avoid frame dropping, the data rate needed to be reduced and that was achieved by going to half-frame capture. Luckily, though there was an impact this was minimal as the half-frame was on width, meaning the lines were stretched out horizontally - the full top-to-bottom resolution was not impacted. The end result was more like recording at VHS half speed - acceptable but with potential artefacts. On the other hand, the bonus was that I could capture double the footage. The only way to have improved that was go over to the expensive full DV standard and FireWire import / export. To redo this now, I'd have to go back to the original tapes and start all over again. Not really feasible.

We know the year. We know the destination. While we usually went away in June to avoid the crowds and all that, this particular year we hit the countryside a second time for a whole week, this time in September to - yes, you've guessed it - to avoid the crowds. The evenings are shorter, you can't escape that reality, but if you plan your days, you enjoy a whole day and still get home before daylight fully expires.
