On 31 August 1997, thousands of mourners gathered in public spaces across the Britain to mourn the death of Diana, Princess of Wales. The announcement in the early hours of the morning that Diana and Dodi Fayed, had died in a Paris car crash was met immediately with international expressions of shock and grief. ITN went to Buckingham Palace to speak to the first people to lay flowers at the palace gates. As the day wound on, thousands more flocked to Buckingham Palace and gave their reactions to the tragic news. Prime Minister Tony Blair, in his constituency of Sedgefield, reacted to the news with a historic address that became one of the most memorable of his premiership. “She was the People’s Princess, and that’s how she will stay, how she will remain”.
