Other parameters such as electrode material, shape, and size also affect the process. Shielding gas has an effect on arc voltage and heat in the arc. One of the benefits of GTAW is the ability to switch polarity to produce a combination of heating and cleaning, which can be useful for aluminum and magnesium welding.
