How Capybaras Communicate with Humans

Описание к видео How Capybaras Communicate with Humans

You can read all about Romeo and Tuff'n in my new book, "I Fell in Love with a Capybara". There are lots of photos of the two and video links where you can see them showing all their interesting and amusing activities.

Tuff'n wants a peanut and he knows his peanuts are kept in a drawer in the coffee table that features in the video. He comes over to me and points his nose directly at the drawer to indicate what he wants. Unfortunately, I don't have the authority to give him peanuts. (These are a treat which he loves.) Having failed in his initial request for a peanut, Tuff'n escalates his behaviour and nibbles on the table. When this doesn't work he uses mouth movements, including his very cute tongue, to indicate that he wants to eat by mimicking a chewing motion. On 3 occasions he also vocalises ultrasonically, at a level outside of human hearing; you can see his diaphragm vibrate and his nose move. Eventually he gives up and indicates his disappointment as he turns away.

Tuff'n lives with Elizabeth Ojeda Reeder and Marvin.
