PowerBook 540c Rescue and Repair - Fixing the vinegar syndrome LCD!

The LCD display on this poor old PowerBook 540c has succumbed to the dreaded Vinegar Syndrome problem, and on top of that the batteries have exploded inside this laptop causing all sorts of havoc. Does it still work and can we get it fixed?
