I bring Sutekh's gift of whomixes. And the collection comes to an end.

I've been working on this since late January and I did not expect it to take another 11 months (with some breaks throughout) but the time spent has been worth it. Most comprehensive arrangement I’ve done to date with I think 45 individual tracks last time I checked.

Part of why it's taken me so long to complete this is the sheer mixing challenges this particular version has produced. I think this theme is emblematic in a way of the RTD2 era - detailed, energetic, perhaps a bit overstuffed and some very obvious errors that should not be there. Given the additional challenges that the compression from streaming platforms brings, the detail of the individual sections doesn't cut through, leaving some instruments sounding smothered while others pop through almost unnaturally. I'm also not convinced this theme was not designed around the Derbyshire theme elements and these had to be added in later. It has been a nightmare trying to get them to integrate them, keeping them audible in the overall mix without sacrificing everything else that's going on. You can hear almost a different mix for each 60th special trying to get it all to sit together and it finally settles for Space Babies but it goes on a journey - sometimes the rhythmic breathing is too strong, the Derbyshire bassline is almost absent in one episode while strong in another and the melody has to compete with a synth that by my ears sounds lifted from the 2010-2013 theme.

And then came August and there was a Proms arrangement! I was able to go and it was such an experience and you bet I was leaning over to stare at the orchestra to see who was doing what. Of course I then had to incorporate that arrangement in somehow but I've put my own spin on it.‪@Dyloneth‬(who's clean opening and closing titles are accompanying the video) very kindly shared some of their isolations with me so I could narrow down a few smaller but still essential elements, namely the rhythmic breathing (I refused to believe it was breathing until an interview with Murray was shared to me and he confirming it's his own breathing) and... an acoustic guitar? Yeah I had no idea that was in the studio recording that's how buried it is. But that helped it all click together so to Dylon, thank you so much!

As a theme itself, it has grown on me. That it's so detailed has been so much fun, it's got a scale to it that I think is sadly lost at broadcast. If we ever get album releases I'll be very interested to hear how those mixes sound.

This has been an incredible but worthwhile challenge. I always knew I had more to learn but I learnt a lot from putting this arrangement together. I hope you enjoy it

Credit as always to Danny Stewart for providing the Derbyshire samples.
