Wave Hill Walk Off - 50 Year Anniversary
Fifty years ago, the Gurindji elders walked off Lord Vestey’s Wave Hill cattle station and never looked back. Their action on August 23rd 1966 became known as the Wave Hill Walk Off and heralded the emerging strong connection with and support of Aboriginal land rights by members of the union movement. On the 19th August 2016, the 50 year anniversary was celebrated by thousands who attended the 50 year Freedom Day Festival at Kalkaringi and Daguragu.
