Hawaiian Pidgin, or Hawaiian Creole, is a very unique and special part of Hawaii's culture. Originating back in the old plantation days, Hawaiian Pidgin is a language that locals speak today. It helps to connect us, as you'll experience if you ever talk Pidgin to someone on the Mainland. However, does Hawaiian Pidgin have a bad reputation? Does it make a person sound less intelligent? I wanted to talk about the perceived negatives of using Pidgin in Hawaii, as well as some of the benefits of this unique language.
