The 2018 Breitling Navitimer B01 Chronograph 43 (AB0121211C1P1) reminds the world that real Breitling Navitimers feature circular slide rule bezels. While the Navitimer 8 was… interesting… the classic calculator bezel chronograph maintains air superiority at the house of Breitling. 43mm and rendered in stainless steel, the 2018 Navitimer B01 Chronograph 43 takes the essential elements of Breilting’s iconic watch, adds a new tone-on-tone blue/black dial, and makes the in-house caliber B01 visible through a sapphire display caseback.

Externally, the Navitimer 1 B01 is a classic polished stainless steel profile first seen on the wrists of AOPA member pilots in 1954. The slim mid-case and short but strong lugs define the profile of every Navitimer model, but they shine brightly in concert with the premium features of the Navitimer 1 B01. A thick alligator leather strap in matching blue includes a striking contrasting stitch in aviation fashion, and a simple steel pin buckle makes on the fly adjustment effortless.

The Breitling Navitimer circular slide rule (calculator bezel) remains a styling mainstay of the range and a handy backup device for rapid multiplication and division; it remains cool and entertaining even if you never bother to learn its operation. The blue sunburst dial includes black sub registers; this is Georges Kern-era Breitling’s subtle way of communicating a model’s use of a manufacture movement. Additional accents of silver, red, and a range of surface textures keep this Navitimer dial lively and premium.

Breitling’s in-house caliber B01 chronograph movement provides motive power. The Automatic winding B01 boasts a superb 72-hour (3-day) power reserve. It also is a COSC-certified Swiss chronometer with hacking seconds (stop seconds), a quickset date, and the refinement of a vertical clutch – column wheel chronograph tandem.

The 47-jewel movement is handsome, and the sapphire caseback permits appreciation of the 28,800 VpH balance, Etachron regulator, and handsome array of machine-finished features. The polished column wheel mechanism is a highlight for watch buyers who love to watch movements in action.

As a pilot’s watch, the Breitling Navitimer 1 B01 is water resistant to 30 meters, so strap on your SuperOcean or SuperOcean Heritage before you take the plunge with this particular high flyer. While Breitling’s 2018 model year is destined to be remembered for the early launch of the Navitimer 8 and the late year debut of the Breitling Premier collection, the 2018 Baselworld highlight for the number one name in pilots watches unquestionably was the Navitimer 1 B01.

And for a brand defined by its traditional Navitimer, that might make the Navitimer 1 the single most important Breitling model launch of 2018.

The Breitling Navitimer 1 B01 Chronograph 43 is encased in 43mm of stainless steel surrounding a blue dial on a black leather strap. Functions include hours, minutes, seconds, chronograph, tachymeter, and date. The watch also measures 14.3mm in thickness and 49mm from lug-to-lug.
