Cuttyhunk Island Cape Cod

A recent trip to cuttyhunk Island on Cape Cod Massachusetts.
Cuttyhunk Island is at the Southwestern end of the Elizabeth Islands in Buzzards Bay of Cape Cod. It is about a mile and a half long and three-quarters of a mile wide with a large natural harbor at the eastern end of the island. Half of the island is a nature preserve. There are only about 20 full time residents that stay in the winter but in the summer time the population can rise to 400 people.

The waters around the island have always been known for their abundance of striped bass and have drawn fisherman from all over the world.
In 1913, Charles Church caught a world-record striped bass that weighed 73 pounds on Sow and Pigs Reef.

I’ve spent time on the island in the past and it is one of my favorite places on the planet. On a recent trip with the Audubon Society I got to visit Cuttyhunk again. We spent most of our time on the paved roads in and around the town and harbor but in the past I spent most of my time there in the nature preserve areas where deer will often stroll out on the dirt paths right in front of you and you are surrounded by the sound of the island’s many birds. No matter where you are here, this is a relaxing and incredibly scenic place to be.
