Barnard Castle is a ruined medieval castle situated in the town of the same name in County Durham. It is a Scheduled Ancient Monument designated as a Grade I listed building in 1950. The remains of the medieval chapel of St Margaret in the outer ward are listed as Grade II.

The first castle on the site was probably a ringwork, a timber structure with a stone gatehouse, protected by the cliffs on the north and western sides and ditches and banks protecting the south and eastern sides. It was established by the Picardy knight Guy de Balliol who in the 1090s had been a supporter of William II in the suppression of a rebellion in Normandy.

In 1952 the ruins were given to the guardianship of the Ministry of Works, later to be named English Heritage.
