The Shinsengumi survived during the last era of the samurai in Japan. In today's world where civilization has matured, committing murder over ideological differences is considered a highly immoral act, but in those tough times, the spirit of risking one's life to protect one's country was very strong and beautiful.
I wanted to capture that mentality in a painting.

What is the Shinsengumi?
A group of swordsmen with many different ideas who survived a turbulent era

The Shinsengumi was a group of swordsmen formed in 1863, towards the end of the Edo Shogunate. It was organized with the aim of maintaining order in Kyoto, and was tasked with suppressing the Sonno Joi (the ideology of the time of respecting the Emperor and expelling foreigners) patriots. However, the Shinsengumi's ideas were by no means simple, and each member had different values, and diverse ideas intersected.

Sonno Joi faction: Members who idealized an emperor-centered political system and sought to expel foreign powers. It is thought that there were many members with these ideologies in the early days of the Shinsengumi's formation.
Pro-shogunate faction: Members who placed the stability of the shogunate first and viewed sonno joi patriots as a danger. As the Shinsengumi gradually became closer to the conservative forces of the shogunate, the number of members with these ideologies increased.
Neutral faction: Members who do not belong to either ideology and are simply proud to belong to the organization known as Shinsengumi.
As members with these different ideologies coexisted within one organization, there was always a sense of tension within the Shinsengumi.

The Shinsengumi came to be called the "Wolves of Mibu" because their strength, ruthlessness, and image of a secret society overlapped with the ferocious and mysterious image of wolves (Mibu is a town in the northwest of Kyoto). The nickname is thought to have come from their rigorous training, high fighting ability, and wariness of the Sonno Joi forces.

The Shinsengumi came to an end after their defeat in the Boshin War (a civil war between the Tokugawa Shogunate and the new government forces that fought for supremacy from 1868 to 1869). The members of the Shinsengumi survived through turbulent times with their own beliefs in their hearts. Their short and intense lives have given rise to many legends, and continue to capture people's hearts even today. They are well-known in Japan, appearing in many works such as movies and games.
