ROBERT KUSHNER - The Fabric of God and Goddesses: Textile Paintings from the 1980's.

Robert Kushner is an American artist born in 1949 in Pasadena, California. With a career spanning decades, Kushner has become a prominent figure in the art world, particularly associated with the Pattern and Decoration (P&D) movement. His work embodies the essence of contemporary art, drawing inspiration from decorative arts, floral motifs, and ornamental aesthetics. He presents his latest exhibition, "The Fabric of God and Goddesses: Textile Paintings from the 1980s." at Galerie Nathalie Obadia until July 22nd 2023.

Kushner's artistic journey began in Pasadena, a vibrant suburb of Los Angeles, where he was raised by a mother who was an abstract expressionist painter. Surrounded by her and her artist friends, he absorbed the values of authenticity, strength, and non-conformity. His early exposure to diverse influences shaped his artistic sensibilities and sparked a lifelong passion for uplifting the spirit through his work.

Inspired by his love for gardening and the natural world, Kushner found solace and artistic expression in painting flowers and cultivating gardens. These childhood experiences with plants laid the foundation for his later exploration of textiles, patterns, and colors.

During a transformative trip to Turkey, Iran, and Afghanistan with his mentor Amy Goldin, Robert Kushner immersed himself in the rich cultural heritage of Islamic art and textiles. He began collecting textiles, discovering their beauty, and recognizing their often overlooked value in the canon of art history. This newfound appreciation for traditional decorative traditions, combined with his formal art education, led him to challenge the Western-centric art world's perception of art. Kushner sought to elevate these exquisite textiles and non-Western influences, examining their craftsmanship, psychology, and intricate relationships between colors and patterns.

Through his artistic practice, Kushner blends elements of contemporary craft, mixed media, and feminist art, all while embracing the postmodernist ethos. His works evoke a sense of joy, engaging viewers with their vibrant and colorful patterns. Drawing inspiration from his personal experiences and emotions, Kushner aims to create a space where viewers can find solace and upliftment.

The artworks in this latest exhibition are from the 1980’s and Kushner's art has evolved since, yet his core aesthetic remains intact. The focus was then on figures and unstretched canvases where color combinations are carefully orchestrated to elicit a sensory experience, akin to opening a long-forgotten box and encountering a familiar yet elusive scent.
