Post emergence Herbicides for Spring planted Maize (Corn) | Crop Reformer

In grain production, spring planted corn contributes more than autumn crop in Punjab. Ideal time of spring grown crop is from mid of January to mid of February but owing to the standing crop of potato, the loin share of its acreage is planted from mid of February to mid of March or even late. Most of the winter weeds like Phalaris miner (Dumbi sittee), Chenopodium (Krund & Bathu), Melilotus , Medicago species (Senji , Maina) and summer perennial weeds like Cyperus rotundus (Mork or Deela) germinate altogether in spring season maize. In case of too late sowing, Trianthema portulacastrum (Itsit) and Dactyloctenum aegyptium (Madhana ghas) also render severe competition. Without proper weed management strategy, potential production of spring maize is very hard to achieve.
Herbicides are playing the most important role in weed management practices. In the previous video, we guided about the use of pre emergence herbicides. In this video, we have facilitated the growers by providing the most recent information about the use of post emergence herbicides in maize. Comparative potency of important products has also been evaluated so that farmers may decide batter option for the selection of proper herbicide. The shared information is several years research data based in which bio efficacy of selected herbicides on individual weeds was accomplished carefully.
We have suggested the post emergence spray of different formulations of mesotrione plus atrazine viz. Gangvi, Fallisto gold Suncrop, Connect FMC or any other each of them@ 500 ml/acre. Connect FMC was found more safe and effective against most of the weeds including Deela (Cyperus rotundus) due to the presence of relatively more amount of mesotrione than most other formulations. In case of severe infestation of Deela in spring maize, halosulfuron may also be suggested but our study revealed that it is the most effective against Deela but renders hiden phytotoxic effect on maize. That is why, it has also been advised that repeated application of mesotrione plus atrazine formulation proves more safe than halosulfuron.
