If you have Gale and Lae'Zel in your party as you enter the finale, you can finesse your way throught he dialogue so that no one transforms, but when you reach the brain stem in the Upper City, Gale must use the Orb to sacrifice himself. No one loses their souls. :)

Note: there does seem to be a visual bug after you tell Orpheus you will be the one to transform if Gale fails to destroy the brain, and your character will appear as a Mindflayer for a split moment.
