Scott McGill "The Chord Book" for Guitar-Dom 7 b5/#5 b9/#9 Type Voicings on the 2456 String Family.

This video covers the Dominant 7th with both types of alteration of the 5th and 9th (b5/#5 b9/#9) type chord voicings found on the 2456 string family on Ab.

The various combinations of these are demonstrated on this chord family. These are derived from the Melodic Minor scale on Db or "Super Locrian" scale and sometimes these chords are called "Altered".

The basic associated harmonies for these for Ab7b5/#5b9#9/b13/#11 chords are C Min7b5, A Minor/maj7, and C Major7th#5/b5. These chords are used to generate Ab7 with both alterations of the 5th and 9th and their resulutions.

The transformation process is discussed and demonstrated here in two ways: 1. The movement of Dom 7 #11 type voicings up a tritone to produce these chords and 2. The alteration of voicings from the Octatonic/Diminished Scale which contain a 5th and/or a 13th (in this case, the notes "Eb" or "F" against an Ab7) moving either one up or down to the note "E". The C Major 7 #5/b5 chord is noted in this context in particular as a Ab7 substitute.

This video series on Guitar Chords covers the concept of Four String Groups for Chords with no doublings. A complete study which will cover Major 7th type, Min7th type, Dominant 7th type, Altered Dominant 7th type , and Diminished 7th type chords with an introduction to voicings on the Augmented Scale/Six Tone Symmetrical Scale as well.

This study will be an extended series of video demonstrations that will help one master all the essential chord types on the Guitar far past the basic inversions of seventh chords, develop the ear, uncover a range of new chord spacings and a wide range of voicings with many unique voice leading possibilities, and develop technical control of the Guitar for writing and performance. Jazz, Fusion, and Classical players will find this useful and the applications to Solo Guitar, Composition, and Group Performance are limitless.
