The Creating a Healthy School Environment Grant Program funding is provided by Highmark Foundation for schools and districts in Central Pennsylvania, Western Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Highmark Foundation awarded grants of up to $5,000 to schools and up to $10,000 for districts. Penn State Hershey PRO Wellness Center is contracted to provide technical assistance to a combination of 69 schools and districts, related to three target areas:

• Healthy Eating and Physical Activity
• Child Injury Prevention
• Physical and Environmental Health

The Center assists awarded schools and districts with data collection and provides technical support for implementing grant activities.

The Highmark Foundation recognizes that schools are powerful places to shape the health, education and well-being of our children. Through the Creating a Healthy School Environment Grant, the Highmark Foundation aims to create healthier school environments that have sustainable and lasting change through a comprehensive school strategy. Promoting child health and wellness is consistent with Highmark Foundation’s goals, strategies and focus to illustrate the effectiveness of early intervention and preventative health programs that address childhood injury prevention, healthy eating and physical activity, physical and environmental health, and bullying prevention.
