My Scottish road trip around the South West Coastal 300 continues as I drive the section from Portpatrick to Newton Stewart. Today’s drive was almost exclusively along the coastline and I caught some amazing scenery as I travelled around the Rhins of Galloway heading eastwards.

My first stop was Portpatrick which was founded as a fishing village and went on to become a busy port operating routes to Northern Island. After the ships and ferries outgrew the town’s small harbour it started to become better known as a holiday destination with historical castles and walking trails nearby.

From Portpatrick I drove south along the Rhins of Galloway to Scotland’s most southerly point. The closer I got the narrower the roads became but the scenery just got better and better. Eventually I arrived at the Mull of Galloway lighthouse and was able to learn about how it played such an important part in the safety of passing vessels. The area is stunning and it was wonderful to see the old foghorn and a few passing storms. After learning what life used to be like for lighthouse keepers I jumped back in the car and got back on the road.

As I drove back around the bay I passed places like Drummore, Sandhead and Port William and saw miles and miles of beautiful beaches and seascapes - it was a true and glorious ocean drive. I also stopped at the ruins of Chapel Finian to see some Scottish history as rain turned to sunshine and then back to rain - in fact it did this throughout the whole day.

By the time I arrived at the Isle of Whithorn the sun was low in the sky and the village deserted. Fishing boats and small trawlers lay on the harbour floor whilst rainbows and storm clouds filled the sky - it was a surreal moment. I walked along to the seafront where I found St Ninian's Chapel and the Isle Head Lighthouse overlooking the vast sea.

Finally I drove onto Newton Stewart and then a little further still to find my accommodation for the night in Creetown - a place called the Barholm Accommodation. I’ll show you the room and share the price I paid to stop here for two nights - definitely bargain of the trip!
