In this video Heimler takes you through Unit 7 Topic 2 of the AP U.S. History curriculum which is set in period 7 (1898-1945).

This period begins with American on the cusp of imperial expansion. The main driver for that expansion would be the Spanish American War (next video: 7.3), but in this video we just consider the main arguments being made during this period, both for and against expansion.

The group for expansion were known as the imperialists and they argued for expansion because of access to raw materials and new markets for goods. Additionally, folks like Alfred Thayer Mahan influenced many of them to build a robust navy to this end.

The anti-imperialists argued that self-determination was a key principle of the American people and thus we should not deny that opportunity to others. But they also argued that the Constitution followed the flag, and that created some difficulties at the prospect of granting rights to folks of other races.

If you have any questions, leave them below and Heimler shall answer forthwithly.

This video is aligned with the AP U.S. History Curriculum and Exam Description for Unit 7 Topic 2, and all the key concepts thereunto appertaining.
