Hallux Rigidus Surgery Part 1: Diagnosis and Deciding How To Treat It

Hallux Rigidus is a very common problem. This video is Part 1 of a series of videos where we will document and detail the journey from diagnosis to surgery and recovery.

About 4 years ago, I had noticed I started having pain in my big toes. They had always "clicked" but now they were becoming painful. It finally reached the point where I went in for an x-ray which showed significant degeneration and bone spurring in the 1st MTP joint. That was 2 years ago.

Recently, I met with a podiatrist friend to see how it had progressed and the bone spurs and degeneration had progressed to the point where surgery was indicated. This imaging, along with my recent modification in my activity level, "spurred" me to do something about it.

Prior to this, I had been keeping my calves loose with stretching and had been trying some manual therapy and mobilization of the joint on my own, but this couldn't counteract the natural process of degeneration in my joint.

This video is an explanation of how I came to the diagnosis, as well as the decision to do surgery. I will be having a Cheilectomy in November, and I will be detailing my journey with this. Stay tuned!
