Dr. Timothy Flanigan is the 2014 honoree of the Mary R. Smith Award. He was unable to attend the awards ceremony since he is still in Monrovia, Liberia helping in efforts to address the Ebola crisis.

The Mary R. Smith Award is given to an individual who has demonstrated extraordinary commitments in the defense of the dignity of the human person.

Dr. Timothy P. Flanigan is a deserving recipient of the award. He is the chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases of the Department of Medicine at Brown University. He is an associate director of the Brown University Fogarty Program to train and mentor overseas investigators in the areas of HIV, AIDS and opportunistic infections. He has traveled extensively supporting best practice medical and development responses to HIV/AIDS. He serves on the Board of Directors of the World Youth Alliance, and along with his family, has been a longtime friend to the mission and work WYA carries out.
