Mozart's 18 completed operas fall into two clumps: the early works that no one cares about, and the late masterpieces that everyone cares about. Available recordings reflect this bifurcation, and in this IDEAL list I propose a balanced mix, with no weak links, of the great works in recent and classic versions, as well as a couple of the earlier pieces for further exploration.
Correction: I accidentally got stuck thinking about Gluck and stuck Iphigenia into Mozart's Idomeneo--it should have been Ilia. My bad!
