Nearly 200 years ago, Moyra Ram Chandra Das, hailing from Dubrajhat in Bardhaman district used to come all the way to Kolkata, to sell his sweets. He would set up a temporary stall in Pathuriaghata Haat and on other days, roam around door to door in the neighbourhood to sell his sweets. Within a short period of time, he managed to make a name for himself. His son and later his grandson, Makhan Lal Das succeeded him.

With the passage of time, the Haat at Pathuriaghata made way for a permanent market space by the name of Natun Bazar and Makhan Lal set up his own shop in the market. This shop is now known as Makhan Lal Das & Sons and is still considered as one of the best sweet shops in the city.
