INRI Meaning on the Cross and in the Bible

Описание к видео INRI Meaning on the Cross and in the Bible

What does the INRI stand for on a crucifix?

The letters INRI are printed on a scroll pinned above the body of Jesus on most crucifixes. The letters stand for the Latin phrase "Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum."

The "I" in Latin becomes a "J" so:

Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum = Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews

This phrase and the acronym INRI on the cross comes from the passion narratives in the Bible:

Over his head they put the charge against him, which read, “This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.” (Matthew 27:37)

"Pilate also had an inscription written and put on the cross. It read, 'Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.' Many of the Jews read this inscription, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, in Latin, and in Greek. Then the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, 'Do not write, 'The King of the Jews,' but, 'This man said, I am King of the Jews.'' Pilate answered, 'What I have written I have written.'" (John 19:19-22)

The meaning of this symbol for us today is that Jesus truly is the King of Kings, Lord of Lords. He is our king. So, what was written to mock Jesus is now written on the cross to attest to the truth that Jesus Christ is king!
