Community First! Village: Finding Peace

Our friend and neighbor, Tuana, was born in Louisiana and moved to East Texas as a young girl. Her fractured family wasn’t able to provide a stable foundation for her, and Tuana soon found herself surrounded by people who didn’t provide the care that she needed. She often worked odd jobs, but nothing consistent enough to pay her bills. Sadly, Tuana soon found herself without a home. She spent too many nights sleeping in her car when there wasn’t room in a shelter.

Fortunately, Tuana made her way home to Community First! Village in 2023 through our partnership with Sunrise Homeless Navigation Center.

Tuana has a busy life here in the Village. She starts her day early by walking her dog and then moves on to her work with the janitorial team. She spends time in the aquaponics greenhouse caring for the plants and fish, and some days she drives the Gus Bus to help her neighbors move around the Village. Tuana also has a group of neighbors that she helps with daily living chores, but it is her big dinner parties that her neighbors appreciate most!

It is because of compassionate and generous people like you that Community First! Village is a place where our neighbors like Tuana can find security, stability, peace and home. You have helped nearly 400 men and women who struggled to survive on the streets find an affordable, permanent home in this caring community.
