GUWAHATI: Times of India
Assam Archaeology Department has expedited the process of finalizing the dossier for the Charaideo site, the first capital of the Ahom Royals, to be sent to the Unesco for a world heritage tag.
Of the 29 Main king, (arround 75 Tipomiya, Charingiya and Namrupiya king) (around 400 Queen or KnowAri) maidams or graves scattered in the Charaideo capital complex, only a dozen are being proposed for the heritage tag. The pyramid-style ancient graveyards have drawn researchers from all over the world to Assam. Conservation activists rued that the maidam of the founder of the dynasty, Chaolung Siu Ka Pha, has not been included in the dossier.
Conservation activist Zakirul Alam, a member of the Charaideo maidam demarcation committee, said while there are around 500 maidams in Charaideo and adjacent Sivasagar district, the number of maidams covered in the present plan is too few to form a grand heritage site of global standard.
"We appeal to the state government and the archaeology department to cover all 29 main king maidams, along with around 160 existing queen maidams so that the proposal stands a strong chance of getting the tag. If there are disputes around some of the maidams, they can be sorted,” said Alam.
He said the state government has already passed the Assam Heritage (Tangible) Protection, Preservation, Conservation and Maintenance Bill, 2020, under which the concerned deputy commissioner can take decisive steps to take over lands where historical monuments are located.
In 2021, the director of land records and survey, Assam, had completed the survey of a vast area, covering around 4,756 bighas, to be included in the dossier. It was planned to be sent for Unesco's approval within a year.
But it was revealed in a recent meeting at the Sivasagar DC’s office that the Sivasagar DC (revenue department) still has not received official communication from the state archaeology department or the Archaeological Survey of India for the demarcation of the surveyed maidam area (4,756 bighas).
Maidam expert and advisory board member of the Charaideo maidam world heritage dossier preparation committee, Jiten Barpatra Gohain, said it is learnt that efforts are on to finalize the dossier in an area of 576 bighas where only around 12 to 14 king maidams are located.
Activists said the maidam of Siu Ka Pha would be excluded from the plan if more areas are not covered. The maidams of six other Ahom kings, who ruled from the Charaideo capital and other Ahom kings who reigned in Gargaon and Rangpur
would also remain excluded from the dossier.
Assam revenue minister Jogen Mahan, a member of the Ahom community, had in November 2020 declared completion of earmarking of the Charaideo Capital Complex area. “The initial survey of the core zone of Charaideo Maidams in the round-up to the preparation of the dossier has been completed on 4,700 bighas,” Mahan had said.
Historians say that the Charaideo is the cradle of Assamese history. After three years of rigorous exercise, the maidams were verified by historians and experts appointed by the state archaeology department. "We will miss a golden chance if the claim is not strong enough and the maidam of the founder of the great Ahoms who ruled for 600 years, is not included,” said Alam.
