Spring is here, and that means it’s time for a garden reset! Welcome to GrowCookPreserve. I'm Kelly and I garden in SW Ohio, Zone 6b. From burning the prairie to clearing out beds, starting seeds, and preparing the soil, I’m shaking off winter and getting ready for a new season of growing, cooking, and preserving.

This week, we tackled a controlled burn in the prairie, an essential part of maintaining a healthy native landscape. Fire helps recycle nutrients, control invasive species, and support biodiversity.

In the greenhouse, I started tomatoes, peppers, and herbs, planning to rotate crops to keep the soil healthy and reduce disease. I also turned the compost and leaf mold, an essential part of my closed-loop system—where food scraps go back to the soil, some to the chickens, and their manure, in turn, enriches the compost.

After a long day of work, I made grilled smash tacos with local grass-fed beef, cultured cream, homemade salsa, fermented cilantro paste, and fresh-picked lettuce—the perfect way to enjoy the first real spring weather. 🌮☀️

The next day--garden cleanup—removing the remains of fall’s last crops, checking on brassicas, alliums, and herbs hardening off, and finding a Carolina mantis ootheca—a welcome sight for natural pest control this season!

Lastly, a container and flower garden reset.

To wrap up, I enjoyed my first al fresco meal of the season--freshly harvested lettuce from the greenhouse for a healthy and delicious garden salad, watching the sunset over my garden, greenhouse, and freshly burned prairie. The land is waking up, and so is the season of fresh, homegrown meals!
