I want talk about a wonderfully xciting piece of software, in fact off all the apps on all the systems this is my favorite type of program: the wwweb browser, u likely know what a wwweb browser is but u might not have considered all the things that make it so fantastic especially for artists.

if ur watching this video there’s a good chance ur interested && u already have a wwweb browser && know how to find content u want, but u might not realize the browser is also a blank canvas for artists. actually, less like a blank canvas && more like an art studio, fully stocked w/all sorts of art tools, like an interactive && generative 2D drawing canvas, also a 3D drawing context, also an audio sampling && synthesis playground, midi, speech synthesis, speech recognition, cryptography, bluetooth it’s got all of the things.

in order to understand why the wwweb browser is the Internet’s gift to artists--by which i mean, in order for us to really take advantage of what it’s got to offer us--we need to understand where browsers came from && the deeply intertwingled ideas of all the radical thinkers who influenced it.

00:02 this quote comes from "Weaving the Web: The Original Design and Ultimate Destiny of the World Wide Web" by Tim Berners-Lee, the creator of the Web. This is a beutiful book, it's so amazing to hear Berners-Lee's first hand ( modest and yet insanely impressive ) account of the Web's inception.

08:04 this is a pretty fantastic 1990 documentary on hypermedia/hypertext called "Hyperland" by Douglas Adams of all people, you gotta watch it! so interesting because today when we hear "hypertext" we think of the web, but in 1990 was only just starting, most folks didn't know anything about it and so the video doesn't mention the web once. a reminder that there was a time when folks thought of the Internet and hypertext as two totally separate things ( that is before Tim Berners-Lee and his collaborators changed the world forever by mashing them up )
