What was The Watcher in the Water? | Lord of the Rings Lore

Hello everyone! And welcoem to the second episode of the Lore of Arda - a new series covering the lore of Middle-Earth and everything Lord of the Rings.
Today's topic is The Watcher in the water, that guarded the West-gate of Moria. I thought it would be an interesting creature to explore and perhaps find out if Sauron controlled the Watcher.
