Do you ever look at some of the colorful characters that populate the pages of a comic book and go, “How do they come up with this stuff?” Some, of course, are based on people who actually existed and were a big part of world history. Bob Kane and Bill Finger famously named and modeled Batman after 2 famous “rebel” leaders: Robert the Bruce, the King of Scotland who led them to freedom from English dominion, and Mad Anthony Wayne, the American Revolution war general renowned for taking down enemy contingents far larger than his. Others were modeled after famous pop culture icons or cinematic creations, like John Constantine’s earlier designs being based on The Police frontman Sting and Conrad Veidt’s character from The Man Who Laughs inspiring Bob Kane to create The Joker. But perhaps the most-curious source of inspiration for a comic book character has to be a skateboarding magazine; and we have to begrudgingly admit that we really, really like this guy. Tom DeFalco’s Night Thrasher (yes, the irony is not lost on us) debuted in Mighty Thor Vol. 1 #411 and is half Bruce Wayne, half Tony Hawk, and 100% certified badass who doesn’t get talked about a lot. Let’s look at this urban vigilante who oozes confidence and swag- this is Night Thrasher’s Origins, Explored.
