History of Bata Shoe Company (Bangladesh) Ltd. Established in 1894, Bata world's second-largest shoe manufacturer and has about 6,000 retail stores around the world. Bata also has 22 production facilities in 18 countries around the world. Currently occupying about 40 percent of the market share, the company began its operation in Bangladesh in 1962. There are currently 226 retail outlets across 63 districts in the country. Bata also has two factories in Dhaka, Tongi, and Dhamrai, which produce 25 to 30 million pairs of shoes every year.
