Liverpool had never won the FA Cup and Bill Shankly wanted to put that right.

Having fallen well behind in the league, Liverpool focussed on cup competitions and, after some early scares, made it all the way through to the final, where they were to face Don Revie's Leeds, who had followed Liverpool's path up out of the Second Division and were now competing on multiple fronts against the country's best.
