"Marangal na Dalit ng Katagalugan" - Anthem of the Sovereign Tagalog Nation (1896-1897)

The Marangál na Dalit ng̃ Katagalugan (English title: Noble Hymn of the Tagalog Nation) was the historic national anthem of the Sovereign Tagalog Nation and is considered the first national anthem of the Philippines.

Julio Nakpil composed the anthem in November 1896 during the Philippine Revolution upon request of Andres Bonifacio to celebrate the founding of the Katipunan. It was first played in the vicinity of Balara in November 1896. While the hymn was originally intended only for the Katipunan, it eventually became the anthem for the Sovereign Tagalog Nation, the revolutionary government led by Bonifacio.

The anthem was not adapted by Aguinaldo's Philippine Republic. Instead, when President Aguinaldo was in Hong Kong, an anthem was composed to be the official anthem of the First Philippine Republic. However, president Aguinaldo was not satisfied, thus, he requested Julián Felipe to compose an anthem for the Philippine Republic. On June 11, 1898, a day before the Proclamation of Independence, Marcha Nacional Filipina was adopted as the official Philippine national anthem. It is still the music of the official national anthem of the Philippines.

In 1903, Nakpil reworked his “Marangal na Dalit” as tribute to Jose Rizal under the title “Salve, Patria,” but the only surviving copies of the original score were destroyed in 1945, during the Battle of Manila. The current version was reconstructed by Nakpil from memory when he was in his eighties.

Ang Marangál na Dalit ng̃ Katagalugan ay ang makasaysayang awitin ng Haring Bayang Katagalugan. Maituturing itong kauna-unahang pambansang awit ng Pilipinas.

Isinulat ito ni Julio Nakpil sa hiling ni Andres Bonifacio upang ipagdiwang ang pagkatatag ng Katipunan. Una itong ipinatugtog malapit sa Balara noong Nobyembre 1896. Kahit na ito ay nilikha bilang dalit ng Katipunan, ito ay sa naging awitin ng Haring Bayang Katagalugan, ang pamahalaang mapanghimagsik na pinamumunuan ni Bonifacio.

Nang maging Pangulo ng Pilipinas si Emilio Aguinaldo noong 1897, ipinalit ang Lupang Hinirang bilang pambansang awit, na kinatha noong 1898 ni Julián Felipe. Ito ang kasalukuyang pambansang awit ng Pilipinas.

Noong 1903, binago ni Nakpil ang alegro ng Marangal na Dalit bilang alay kay Jose Rizal. Pinamagatan itong “Salve, Patria”. Sa kasamaang palad, ang mga tanging natitirang sipi ng musika nito ay nasunog noong 1945, sa kasagsagan ng Labanan sa Maynila. Ang kasalukuyang panitik ay muling binuo ni Nakpil mula sa kanyang isipan noong siya ay nasa mga edad na ika-walumpu.
