What are the most interesting Indian and South Asian diasporas around the world in the present day? The subcontinent of South Asia is a massive area that currently has over 2 billion inhabitants and spans the countries of Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, the Maldives, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. These nations are divided between hundreds of different languages, ethnicities, religions and castes to create a beautiful mosaic of human diversity that comes together to form unique identities and groups in the modern era, often with a volatile history. In the past several thousand years, South Asians have spread to neighboring regions such as the Southwest and Southeast Asia, having a very large impact on the cultures of these regions through the spread of ancient Indian religions such as Hinduism and Buddhism.

However, these ancient South Asian communities would mostly intermix and assimilate with the local indigenous people of these regions so the vast majority of overseas South Asians today are actually descended from more recent migrants within the past couple hundred years. On the older side, many South Asian communities such as those in Fiji, Southeast Africa, the Caribbean, Malaysia and Singapore are the result of British, French and other European colonial powers exporting large numbers of Indian laborers to work in their overseas territories through the Coolie system, often in harsh and unforgiving environments and conditions. More recently, unprecedented numbers of South Asians have settled in the Anglosphere, the Middle East and mainland Europe.
