Turnip greens are dependably one of the cheapest cooking greens at the grocery store. As the price of groceries has offended me lately, I thought it'd be a good excuse to make a traditional cheap soup that'll feed a family for just a few bucks.

This is one of those recipes with lots of variations and everyone whose family has a tradition of making it probably makes it a little differently. There's lots of ways to improvise here, but the basic premise is: get a piece of smoked meat on the bone, cook it and make stock, then use the stock to make a long-simmered soup of turnip greens, black eyed peas and vegetables. I used a smoked venison shank and homemade andouille sausage but you can use whatever you have on hand.

After hours of cooking the turnip greens get soft and velvety. The broth gets rich and flavorful, and reminds me of old commercials for Progresso soup, except this actually does eat like a meal.
