Way of the Cross Meditation - 3rd Station
Will God give us a heavier cross than we can bear? In this valley of tears, we are called to carry our crosses to the end, to carry them as Our Lord has carried His. But are there times when it is justifiable to abandon them? To the Way of the Cross we turn for inspiration, strength and the answer.
Hello and welcome to America Needs Fatima. Be sure to hit subscribe and click the notification bell to never miss out on another story of Mary.
The Way of the Cross is not for the faint of heart. It is a road paved by uneven stones and will cause us to stumble more often than not. But falling is part of the journey; and more importantly getting back up, as we see Our Lord do three times during His Passion, when the weight of the cross became too heavy. It is often too easy to give in to the “reason” of abandoning our crosses. After all, if the weight is too much to bear, why should we labor on?
But will God really give us more than we can bear?
In the words of Prof. Plinio Corrêa de Oliveira, prominent Catholic Brazilian thinker…
Lord, “Was it not justifiable for You to abandon Your cross? By carrying it until all Your strength was exhausted, until the insupportable weight of the wood hurled You to the ground, had You not clearly proved that it was impossible for You to continue? Your obligation was fulfilled. Let the angels of heaven carry Your cross for You now…
“In these moments of trial, we rationalize. We have already done all that we can. After all, a man’s strength is so limited! God will take this into account. Come, let us drop the cross here by the roadside and sink cozily into a life of pleasure. Nevertheless, by acting in another way, You, O Lord, give my cowardice a sublime lesson. With Your strength exhausted, You did not renounce the burden but asked for yet more strength to carry the Cross once again. And You obtained it.”
And therein lies one of the most important lessons we can ever hope to grasp. We need only ask. Our strength is lacking, and often runs dry. So long as your intent is pure and good, God our Father’s strength is infinite and will come to aid your struggles, if only we would humble ourselves and ask.
“Grant me, Jesus, the grace to continue to embrace my cross, even when I collapse under its weight. Grant me the grace to rise up again whenever I grow faint.”
Then there is Our Lady. Did she abandon her crosses? No, she remained with her Son every step of the way during the Passion. How did Our Lady appear during the Miracle of the Sun at Fatima? She appeared as Our Lady of Sorrows. But why Our Lady of Sorrows?
Was it because she knew that during the times in which we live, her Beloved Son through His Church, would suffer yet another Passion? I believe she was entreating you and me to follow her example, and not abandon Our Lord along His Way of the Cross; and to remind us that He will certainly not abandon us along ours.
It was not only the physical torments that caused Our Lord to suffer during the Passion, but also the mental and psychological pains…
“He was assailed by the tumultuous manifestations of hatred and ingratitude of those whom He had loved: Two steps away was a leper whom He had healed; a little farther, a blind man to whom He had restored sight; farther along, a tormented soul to whom He had restored peace. All of them called for His death; all of them hated Him; all of them insulted Him. These cause Jesus immensely more suffering than did the inexpressible pains that weighed upon His Body.”
May we act as Our Lady did—remain by His side and never abandon Him—and ask like Our Lord did, for the strength to stand back up when we stumble, and to carry our crosses all the way to our Calvary.
Part of Our Lord’s suffering at this very moment is seeing our innocent children under brutal attack. Do you oppose Satan and cherish their innocence? Then please take a moment to click on the link below to oppose a terrible blasphemy going on right now.
My next episode will be out next week. I’ll be answering the question: Is the crucifixion of Jesus as relevant in 2022 as it was in past times?
May God bless you and Mary Immaculate keep you under her mantle.

America Needs Fatima is a campaign to capture the heart and soul of America with the Message of Our Lady of Fatima. In 1917, Our Lady asked for prayer, penance and other measures to avoid chastisement of
suffering, famines, and wars. She also promised that:
“Finally, my Immaculate Heart will triumph.”
