1v1 Defending Drill

Today we are covering a 1v1 defending drill that also allows players to work on attacking as well. I’ll explain how many players are needed, how to set it up, what coaching points are a must, and variations on the drill to make it more exciting. This drill will help your players work on dispossessing as well as slowing possession. Furthermore, you will be able to instruct your players how to force an attacker out of bounds and Develop your players’ defensive stance.

-Set up one 10-yard wide by 20-yard long grid for every two to three players.
-Player 2 and Player 3 have soccer balls to start. Player 2 attacks while Player 1 defends.
-After either the far line is crossed by the attacking player with the ball, the defender kicks the ball out-of-bounds, or the defender gains possession of the ball, that set is done.
-Then, Player 1 goes back to the starting side. Player 2 goes from attacking Player 1 to now defending against Player 3.
-If you have players on your team who will always play defense and others who will always attack, you can have certain players always attacking and other players always defending.
-Try to assign the more-skilled players on your team to the same group. Assign the less skilled players to their own group.
-Rotate players to different groups after each set.
-Perform 3 total sets with 6 minutes for each set. After 3 minutes, change the order so the person the player previously attacked against will be the person they now defend against and vice versa.

For Coaching Points, make sure to address these 5 key things:
1. Teach your attacking players to use self-passes when the defender reaches in the for the ball.
2. Instruct the attacking players to use jab steps when the defender is backpedaling.
3. If the attacker is centered in the grid, then teach the defender to push the attacker to their weak foot. Otherwise, the defender should push the attacker to the nearest out of bounds.
4. Teach “Patience Angled Toes” (P.A.T.) to the defenders for their defensive stance.
5. Emphasize to defenders that kicking the ball out-of-bounds can be highly effective in a game to buy your team more time to regain its defensive shape.

Some variations on this drill, depending on how old your players are:
1. Award points: If the player attacking dribbles past the other side of the 20-yard grid, they receive a point. If the defender dispossesses the attacker, the defender gets a point. If the defender kicks the ball out-of-bounds, then neither player gets a point.
2. To make the drill easier for attackers, widen the field. To make the drill easier for defenders, make the field narrower.
3. Also, consider 1v2s, 2v1s, & 2v2s using a similar format.
