Learn to Sail: Parts of the Opti

Join ASI teacher, Iain, learn about the Opti! In this video, Iain explains some of the different parts of the Optimist, what they are called, and what they are used for. This is part 1 of Iain’s "Learn to Sail" series.

Vocab:
Hull - The shell and framework of the basic flotation-oriented part of a ship
Port - Towards the left-hand side of the ship facing forward; denoted with a red light at
Starboard - Towards the right-hand side of a vessel facing forward; denoted with a green light at night
Stern - The back of a ship
Bow - The front of a ship
Rudder - A fin attached a ship that is used to steer
Tiller - The handle of the rudder
Daggerboard - Also known as a centerboard, a board jutting out from underneath a ship to prevent it from moving side to side
Bailer - A pitcher or jug-like bucket used in an Opti to scoop out water
Mainsheet - The rope used to control the direction of the sail
Mast - The main pole holding up the sail
Boom - The horizontal pole which extends from the bottom of the mast; adjusting the boom towards the direction of the wind is how the sailboat is able to harness wind power in order to move forward or backward
Cleat - A device used to hold rope in place
Outhaul - The rope on the boom used to control the tension of the bottom of the sail
