BERLIN WALK | REINICKENDORF | Alt-Wittenau | Märkisches Viertel

Reinickendorf (Alt-Wittenau)

Alt-Wittenau, now part of the Berlin district of Reinickendorf, has a long and eventful history. The village of Wittenau, formerly known as Dalldorf, was first mentioned in historical records in 1332. In the 19th century, Dalldorf gained notoriety due to the establishment of the "Provinzial-Irrenanstalt" (Provincial Asylum), which was later renamed Wittenau to shed the village's negative reputation. Over time, the rural village developed into an urban residential area where historical buildings meet modern architecture. The Wittenau village church and the old school building are examples of preserved historical structures. Alt-Wittenau thus offers an interesting contrast between traditional Berlin village structure and urban living.

Märkisches Viertel Center

The Märkisches Viertel in the Berlin district of Reinickendorf is a characteristic example of social housing from the 1960s and 1970s. The neighborhood was built as one of Berlin’s largest residential complexes to meet the growing housing demand in the post-war era. The center of the Märkisches Viertel is now a vibrant place with shopping, cultural offerings, and recreational activities. The shopping center "Märkisches Zentrum" provides residents and visitors with a wide variety of shops, restaurants, and services. Despite the challenges associated with large-scale housing estates, the Märkisches Viertel has developed into a distinct neighborhood with a strong community, where social diversity and cultural life blend together.
