Susannah Foster spanked - There's Magic in Music (1941)

Also known as The Hard Boiled Canary, this film sees burlesque performer Susanna Foster rescued from a raid in a nightclub by Allan Jones and Lynne Overman. However, their motives are not entirely chivalrous, as they are so impressed by her singing they have a bet to see if she can pass professionally in a posh music camp. Not that they tell the camp about her past, as is demonstrated here in this scene when Margaret Lindsey's music expert finds out. Then there is the fact that Foster just won't play ball, leading to an extraordinary scene where Jones and Overman decide to teach the little madam a lesson. From dunking her face in a bowl of soapy water to then pulling her over Jones' knee to spank her because she won't take her clothes off (no, it's not as dubious as it sounds) to put on a decent frock, this scene has to be seen to be believed! Even Overman asks to take a turn spanking her!

As to the actors and actresses in this clip, Allan Jones is best remembered now for Showboat (1936) (and a beautiful voice), while the similarly stunning singer Susanna Foster went on to appear in The Phantom of the Opera (1943). Margaret Lindsey was already known for early Pre Code films and appearing with Bette Davis in Dangerous (1935) and Jezebel (1938), though this beauty never married - mainly because she was in a long term relationship with fellow actress Mary McCarty. As for Lynne Overman, just two years after this film he would be dead from two heart attacks within two months of each other in 1943, aged just 55.
