Brian Cantrill, vice president of Engineering at Joyent, presents "Experiences Porting KVM to SmartOS" at the KVM Forum 2011 in Vancouver, Canada.

Cantrill talks about SmartOS, a derivative of a truly open source fork of OpenSolaris called Illumos. Key functionality inherited from OpenSolaris/Illumos includes enterprise-grade CFS, dtrace, OS-based virtualization, and network virtualization. Hardware-based virtualization is an ongoing project, though there have been advances by Intel and AMD in this space.

Cantrill goes over the process and pains of porting KVM to SmartOS, the limitations and standards of their work, and the roadblocks they encountered along the way. He highlights contributions from members of the Illumos community as well as on-going innovation.
