How to draw illuminated letter V ~ Baroque style ornate letter tutorial ~ Illuminating manuscripts

Today we will be designing and drawing an illuminated letter V in Baroque style with botanical decorative background and featuring the contrast of yellow gold with dark warm grey colors.

In this step by step art video tutorial, you will learn how to design an ornate letter, how to draw a botanical ornament, how to make a preliminary sketch of the design and transfer it onto working surface. Next, we are going to color and shade botanical decorative elements, such as flowers and leaves, with color pencils. Lastly, you will see how to paint illuminated letter in gold, how to create a gold leaf effect, how to use ink for drawing outlines, how to use ink pens for hatching technique.

~ Watercolor paper or mixed media paper sheet big enough to fit 8x8 cm ( inch) design (Japanese cold pressed watercolor paper is used)
~ Tracing paper (try using baking paper if tracing paper is unavailable)
~ Small eraser (e.g., Tombow Mono Zero eraser pen)
~ Ruler
~ HB and/or B+ (B2, B4 etc.) graphite pencil
~ Tape (masking tape/ washi tape/ paper tape- an easily removable tape which wouldn't damage paper surface much)
~ Brush: W&N Cotman 111 round

🍁 Metallic pigments: Artline Decorite Gold water based pigment ink pen 1.0 by Shachihata, Yellow Gold No 903 from Gansai Tambi Starry Colors by Kuretake;
🍁 Colored pencils (Faber Castell Polychromos): Warm Grey VI 275, Warm Grey V 274, Warm Grey IV 273 , Warm Grey III 272 , Warm Grey I 270 ;
🍁 Black ink pens: Copic multiliner 0.1, Sakura Pigma Micron 05 and 01.
