Hello everyone and welcome to another exciting and educational episode of IV University. Where you can get your PVF Degree for free. Today's episode we talk about strainers, and I promise you that this episode will make you think, It will make you use your head, and your mind, and your brain… also a special guest renown painter Bob Ross will teach us how to make sure our PVF is always looking great.

But first lets talk about strainers.

A strainer is defined by its purpose to remove unwanted large particles from a liquid suspension, usually to protect some sort of downstream equipment, such as a pump or a more delicate filter, from the damage that these rogue particles might cause.

The three strainers most commonly used in the industrial PVF world are the close up’s . the y strainer, the basket strainer, and the conical strainer or more frequently called “cone” strainer or “witches hat”. In fact, a quick aside, just like in harry potter movies these “witches hat” can double as a sorting hat to tell you which house you belong to.

So lets talk about the y-strainer… Y-Strainers are the most used devices for mechanically removing unwanted solids from liquid, gas or steam lines by means of a perforated or wire mesh straining element. Video They are used in pipelines to protect pumps, meters, control valves, steam traps, regulators and other process equipment. They do this by utilizing a perforated metal, mesh or wedge wire straining element. ...

You must pay attention to the orientation of the chamber which collects debris and the drain (blow-down) connection of the Y Strainer.
To provide for easier maintenance, the Y-Strainer should be located where the drain plug can be removed. Additionally, ensure the drain or blow-off is located at the lowest position when installed. If installed in the vertical position, the wye side of the strainer must be pointing downward.

Lets talk Basket strainers, these strainers feature a top removal of the screen. The screen is the form of the basket with a lifting handle, so that all particulate captured and retained by the screen can easily be removed. In most cases, Basket strainers used mostly for smaller valves.

The third main type of strainer is the conical strainer. This strainer is a temporary strainer for any fluids application. For trapping foreign particles in the pipe line to be used as temporary strainers during start up and trail runs.

So what did we learn today about strainers? Lets review… a strainer is used to protect other downstream equipment from damage by rogue junk. A filter is employed to separate particles from the fluid.

The 3 main types of strainers used in the industrial PVF world are, video the y strainer which is the most used device for mechanically removing unwanted solids from liquid, gas or steam lines by means of a perforated or wire mesh straining element. IV carries these in Bronze/WCB/Cast iron & stainless.

The Basket strainers, these strainers feature a top removal of the screen. The screen is the form of the basket with a lifting handle, so that all particulate captured and retained by the screen can easily be removed. Picture IV carries these in cast iron and wcb with clamp covers for easy access or bolt covers for long term lock down.

The conical strainer which strainer is a temporary strainer for any fluid applications. This is used trapping foreign particles in the pipeline to be used as temporary strainers during start up and trail runs.

Bonus did you know mesh size varies on all these strainers, and these strainers are used quite often for sediment, but mostly for equipment, welding rods, gloves, hard hats, etc. that are mishandled by those working the pipeline upstream.

so I hear a lot from viewer mail and people stopping me on the streets saying Professor Jim, video why does all the PVF you show in these segments look so good. Well its because we take great care of course, but also if there is a chip in the paint and if they get a little sloppy looking we have our warehouse watch a video on helping our PVF look it’s best, camera which leads me to introduce a the video we show them entitled “the joy of painting PVF” with Bob Ross.

So there you have it, you now know everything about Industrial Strainers, and how we keep them looking so good. Have a great day everybody.
