Nabin Subba, born on December 14, 1967, stands as a distinguished Nepalese film director, screenwriter, and producer, acclaimed as a pioneering force in the "Fourth Cinema" movement within Nepalese cinema. Focusing on indigenous communities, his films, Khangri and Numafung, have garnered global acclaim at various film festivals. The highly praised Goodbye Kathmandu exemplifies Subba's ability to transcend borders, propelling Nepali films onto the international stage. Additionally, he has directed the impactful TV serial Dalan, addressing Dalit issues, and leads the Indigenous Film Archive (IFA), annually organizing the Nepal International Indigenous Film Festival (NIIFF).
Subba's career, initiated with acclaimed plays, culminated in the receipt of the Best Play of the Year award in 1988. Concurrently, he has contributed to journalism in various publications, showcasing his diverse talents. Noteworthy works encompass Khangri, Numafung, Goodbye Kathmandu, and the TV series Dalan.
In his eagerly awaited recent film, "Gaun Aayeko Bato" (A Road to A Village), Subba delves into the dreams and struggles of a rural Nepali family as a road connects their once-isolated village to the modern world. The narrative follows Maila, a traditional basket weaver, facing challenges as modernity introduces novelties. His son, Bindray, captivated by contemporary culture, aspires to own a costly television. Financial struggles prompt Maila to contemplate selling wares in the city, but urban complexities and haunting memories complicate the journey. The film poignantly captures the clash of old and new, emphasizing the significance of adaptation for survival. Recognized at renowned festivals like Toronto, Busan, Mumbai, São Paulo, and Göteborg, it attests to Subba's cinematic prowess on the global stage. The film is scheduled for public cinema screenings starting on May 31st.
