Former Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit is likely to take over as the Congress’ Delhi state unit chief, days after incumbent Ajay Maken resigned from the post, ThePrint has learnt.

According to senior leaders, an announcement is likely Thursday. Sources said the party will also appoint a group of working presidents to help Dikshit, a move that has been approved by Congress president Rahul Gandhi.

“Dikshit is likely to be appointed as she has experience of running the government in Delhi. She is also an acceptable face,” said a senior Congress leader. “The leadership will ensure there is a team of young working presidents who will work in tandem with her.”

Dikshit had been voted out in 2013 after 15 years in power but still enjoys popularity in the national capital. She is credited with the transformation of Delhi. Although she hasn’t been in the pink of health, at 80, and underwent surgery in France recently, the Congress is likely to fall back on her to ride on her personal popularity to bring the party back in power in Delhi.
