Full Grown Firemouth Cichlid Fish Tank - Adult Pair Breeding. I fed my Firemouth cichlids New Life Spectrum foods for a while and they really grew into beautiful adults fast. It’s top notch food! I love the stuff.

Is the light in this aquarium sufficient for growing plants? I thought my first plant suffered because I picked the wrong kind of plant, a harder to grow one, so I got an anubias instead, but it also seems to be doing unwell. My aquarium is in my room, and doesn’t get a lot of natural light, due to blackout curtains in my room. What else can I be doing to help it grow and thrive?

Care Guide:    • Firemouth Cichlid Care (Need to Know)

There are a lot of low tech plants that do well with moderate lighting. That being said, I recommend you still do your research on what a particular plant needs in order to do well with your setup and the work you're willing to put into it. Anubias cannot have their rhizome buried in substrate or they'll rot. They do better with their roots tethered to wood or stones. Marimo moss balls are kept by many betta tank owners but they actually prefer cold water with dim lighting, and should be put in the fridge every once in a while to rejuvenate. Amazon swords are beautiful but will grow very large and are prone to diatom growth on their leaves with enough light. These are all considered easy beginner plants but they come with their own little extra requirements in order to thrive.

Okay so I’ve had my ten gallon for a month or so, I have lots of plants in there and fish. I’ve been trying to conduct a fish-in cycle, while I know it’s not the best it’s the only option I have. I’ve been using prime & stability’s and have been testing water daily. Every-time I test my water ammonia nitrite and nitrate are always at 0, sometimes ammonia may be 0.25 which still isn’t bad for having fish. Why hasn’t my tank started cycling? I’ve been told that prime may convert ammonia and my plants can be eating nitrite up.... I understand that fish-in cycle can take a super long time, but what’s the best why I can actually start a cycle! I’ve done so much research and have asked for help with no luck...

Wish I could help. I have a 10 gallon and I’m currently doing one (fish in) It’s been since September 14th. My nitrite is finally spiking. I hope the end is near because this is stressful!

I appreciate everyone for the help. I'll get readings but I think I should let it re-cycle, and keep the inhabitants to a low minimum. One day im sure it'll be a quarantine tank which is a wonderful idea but right now I wanna make it clear and nice. Id like to get a couple live plants and remove all the fake ones when the chemistry inside has gotten better.

Yeah trust me. Live plants are a life saver!!! I was having trouble keeping my parameters leveled in my tank too. It’s a well established 30 gal but I’m close to my “ fish inches limit” ( this the 75gal I’m currently cycling fishless) I put live plants in my 30 - just a bit of dwarf grass and some swords) and with my plecos anc corys my parameters are almost perfect every week.

Pretty much the only reason I do a w/c is to have the water for my garden - and to keep a habit going just in case.

Yeah that sounds wonderful. We've decided to pull out most of the artificial stuff. Some of the substrate. (I think its a little harsh maybe.. thought I had gotten a finer one but.. )but keep the filter for now for the bacteria. I'll upgrade it later but I wanna get a couple live plants to put in there asap. I'd rather do live plants rather than chemicals.

I did about 80% of the water and no filter. I wanna keep the little bacteria I have since my tank seems to be finding an equilibrium so I can get a good filter and use the bacteria in it. Since most the inhabitants are dead, Chonk (the puffer) and Gary (the snail) seem to be ok. The water is clearing back up a little but not perfect. Gonna take a water sample and the dead ones up to petco and do something. Im actually fixing to head that way in a few.
