"Australian Waters" (Jig)

In 1996, Kieran O’Hare loaned me his copy of The Drones and the Chanters Volume 2 (released in 1994). I learned “Australian Waters” from Seán Óg Potts’s playing on this recording. In the 1990s, the internet was in its infancy, and not everyone had an email address. Recordings from Ireland had to either be imported to specialty record shops or purchased when we traveled there. This album is a compilation of late-twentieth-century masters including Robbie Hannan, Joe McLaughlin, Liam O’Flynn, Ronan Browne, Gay McKeon, and Mick O’Brien. This recording offers a pinnacle vista of the piping tradition. Potts’s playing of “Australian Waters” is stunning and features many double cuts (bounced fingers) as well as trills.

I include a transcription and arrangement of "Australian Waters" in my forthcoming book: 20 Essential Uilleann Piping Tunes, Vol. 1. The sheet music (including suggested ornamentation and variations) is available now on Amazon:
