Otaru City
It is about 40km from Sapporo City and is a great place for a day trip.
The city has over 100 Sushi restaurants, a beautiful canal, and many buildings designated as important cultural properties by the government, making it a nostalgic town.

(History):
About 100 years ago, Otaru's port was always congested with many ships transporting goods from Hokkaido to Honshu.
The Otaru Canal was built to alleviate this congestion and was completed in 1923. Small boats called barges traveled the waterway,
transporting many goods from ships offshore to warehouses on the coast.
Otaru became the leading economic city in northern Japan, and the canal was a bustling logistics hub, but a new wharf was built, and the city became a car-oriented society,
and it was filled in and turned into a road.
At the request of the people living in Otaru, half of the canal was left as it was.
The beautiful Otaru Canal with its stone pavement and gas lamps.

Otaru flourished as a commercial city, and at the end of the Taisho period (around 1926) it was also a "financial town" with 25 banks lined up.
Many bank buildings designed by leading designers of the time remain.

Herring fishing has been popular in Otaru since ancient times, and glass floats and glass oil lamps developed for fishing were used,
which led to a thriving glass industry and made the city famous as a glass town.

小樽市
札幌市から約40ｋｍの距離で日帰り観光ができます。
市内には100店舗以上の寿司店があり、美しい運河、国指定重要文化財の建物が多くノスタルジックな街です。

（歴史）：
今からから100年ほど前小樽の港は北海道の物資を本州に運ぶため多くの船で常に大渋滞していました。
その解消のために造られた「小樽運河」
完成したのは1923年。艀（はしけ）という小舟が水路を往来し、沖合の船から沿岸の倉庫まで多くの荷物が運ばれました。
北日本随一の経済都市となった小樽で運河は物流の拠点として活気がありましたが、新たな埠頭が建設され、車社会となり
道路へ埋め立てられました。
小樽に暮らす人々の要望により、運河は半分の姿を遺すことになりました。
石畳とガス灯のともる美しい小樽運河です。

商都として栄えていた小樽は大正末期（1926年頃）「金融の街」でもあり、25行の銀行がありました。
当時の一流の設計者が手がけた銀行建築が多く遺っています。

古くから小樽は鰊漁業が盛んであり、漁に使うために開発された「ガラス製の浮き玉」やガラス製の石油ランプが使われていたのでガラス工業が栄え、ガラスの街としても有名になりました。
